Embarking on this ‘being more present online’ thing means I’ve been more… online.
And let me tell you, it’s like I’ve been invited into the millionaires club, where all the Super Successful Entrepreneurs & Badass Boss Babes hang out.
I kinda thought they’d be too busy counting all their money to bother with Facebook, but au contraire!
(As you can see, my French is coming on in leaps & bounds)
And did you know they’re so good at earning six figures, they only work part-time, which is why they’re so charitable & want to share the secret method they used to earning all that dollar?
Everywhere I look, I’m being promised my side-hustle (i.e. my writing) will get-me-rich-quick, if only I buy this (limited time offer) online training course , workbook, coaching session or group membership.
It doesn’t matter that the grammar is wincingly bad, it’s cat-nip to this easily-distracted, loves-a-quick-fix, ready-to-impulsively-spend, mind of mine.
All I really want to do is write my newsletter, write for two or three clients freelance & write books. What I’ve actually done this week, is -
Pay for a video course about ‘How to attract 100 clients’ - I don’t want, nor am I capable of working with, 100 clients
Sign up to a training session on ‘Making sales through Instagram’ - I don’t have anything to sell
Join three groups that promise me ‘Six Figure Months with One Secret Method’ - I still haven’t learned the secret, unless it’s just ‘manifest a bit harder’.
Rational me knows this is rubbish, but ADHD-me is opening her purse & buying it all, hook, line & sinker.
And it’s not just me falling for this schtick. I’ve read multiple posts from embarrassed women who’ve spent hundreds (and sometimes thousands) on empty promises of gold & glory.
Your Ultimate Guide to Earning Six Figures
So, in an effort to save us all our cash & sanity, I’m going to share with you the real secret to working a job you love, remotely, online & earning six figures.
There’s no paywall, but if you do want to help a girl out, share this far & wide, or upgrade to a paid subscription, so I can afford to buy a coffee every now & again.
Spend two decades journaling, writing & dreaming of writing
Spend one year thinking about a book idea
Spend one year writing & editing that idea
Get an agent, put the book out to auction
Get a pre-empt offer of £80k (this is when a publisher wants the auction to close immediately, so they go in high)
Ignore ridiculously high pre-empt, because it doesn’t align with your values, even though everyone is telling you it’s a dream offer for a debut author.
Get four other publishing offers (ha, told you so!)
Choose the one that aligns with your soul, then let your agent haggle until you get six figures.
Get paid that money in four installments over 2 years, while you work on edits
Pay 20% of that six figures to the tax man & 15% to your agent
Have a Rejection Sensitive Meltdown when book is published
Panic that you’re a terrible writer & you’ll never have a creative idea again.
Find a partner who offers to cover the rent for a while
Get a job that covers the rent, so you can do the thing for the love, not the money.
Do the thing for free, because you only left your real job because this was supposed to be more fun.
Repeat.
Maybe I am missing out on some secret method, maybe I’m too cynical. But at least when I bring it back to basics, to my writing, it feels a whole lot more authentic.
Hope this helps.
Angie
